As people age, they often find that what was once easy has become increasingly more diffcult to manage. They may have problems with handling everyday situations, have forgetfulness, and fear of not being able to take care of themselves in their activities of daily living (ADLs).

An assisted living facility can provide the care and services your parent will need. It usually is a large community and will provide private or shared rooms offering cooking (3 meals a day), cleaning, shopping (trips to doctors, dentists etc), and assistance with dressing, bathing, grooming and medication handling. Sometimes the facility will have a full time LVN or RN on premise. Another type of facility is the smaller 6 person board and care. They are typically a home in a neighborhood housing 6 residents in their own private or shared room with two daytime care-givers (one at night). They offer home cooked meals three times a day with close supervision and care in all areas. Some will take residents with different levels of Alzheimer or dementia and have a waiver through licensing. The homes can be secured or ‘locked’ and will take seniors that have a tendency to wander.

When making your selection of a home for your loved one take in consideration the cleanliness and quietness, speak to the caregivers to get a sense of the place. Ask for brochures, learn what services they will be offering and what will not be covered. How many years in business, find out if there have been any complaints.

The goal of the facilities is to make your loved one feel as if they are in a new home and will be as comfortable as they were in their family home. Making a selection takes time and consideration and visiting a few different places is very important. We personally visit and evaluate each retirement and senior care home. It is then evaluated according to the very highest standards based on the level of care, staffing, atmosphere, experience of staff and administrator. We have a vast data base and can provide lists of facilities in all areas and locations.
